The dawn of the new millennium was marked by one of the most tragic and shocking events of the century—the 9/11 terrorist attacks on America. The event’s artistic impact remains in question, but the 2000s are considered a musical decade that arguably did not develop or create many new music styles but rather built upon what had already been created.
By early 2002, the teen-pop trend was on its way out, along with the end of the “boy band” era, although the decade would see individual artists from these groups—such as Justin Timberlake of *NSYNC—come into their own as powerhouse solo artists. Timberlake’s FutureSex/LoveSounds catapulted the artist into superstardom, spawning the megahits “What Goes Around…Comes Around,” “My Love,” and “SexyBack,” and earning the artist four Grammy Awards. At the same time, female solo artists such as Lady Gaga brought hits such as “Poker Face” and “Just Dance.” In fact, women continued to dominate the decade in other genres; by the end of the decade, Contemporary R&B artist Beyonce would be tapped as the most successful artists of the decade, with Rihanna not far behind.
The genre of Contemporary R&B actually dominated the charts for the decade, but the 2000s also saw the continued success of alternative and indie rock in the form of hits from groups such as Radiohead, Oasis, Death Cab for Cutie, The Killers, Arcade Fire, and Vampire Weekend. A splinter genre for alternative/indie rock was the burgeoning “emo” music, with groups like Fall Out Boy and My Chemical Romance enjoying hits. In the earlier part of the 2000s, power pop and pop rock rose to prominence, with Blink-182, Evan and Jaron, Snow Patrol, Good Charlotte, and Ryan Cabrera all enjoying hits. Female musicians such as Kelly Clarkson and Michelle Branch contributed to the strengthening of the genre, also supported in part by the rise of the “American Idol” artist, a group which Kelly Clarkson bolstered with her remarkable success after being the first winner of the reality show.
But it was hip hop that continued to truly dominate popular music in this decade, with artists such as Kanye West, The Black Eyed Peas, 50 Cent, and Ludacris all rising into mainstream popularity. The year 2000 saw the rise of the rap star Eminem, who became one of the few successful Caucasian rappers by the earlier part of the decade and the best selling rapper of all time by its end.
On the juxtaposing side of style, the early 2000’s saw a rapidly growing form of “nu metal,” a genre launched in the late 1990’s but which did not begin to see traction until bands such as Linkin Park, Korn, Slipknot, and Limp Bizkit began scoring hits in the earlier part of the 2000’s.
The decade of the 2000s would end as many previously had; with tragedy marking the end of an era. In the summer of 2009, legendary pop icon Michael Jackson passed away, creating a public mourning of the magnitude not seen since the passing of Princess Diana in the late 90’s. With Jackson’s passing, pop rock began to experience a slight decline at the end of the era, but the unique fusion of electronic dance and hip hop—which would come to be known as Hip House—was just around the corner.
